Chapter Twenty-Four

Word came that the other search teams were making progress but had failed to find what they were looking for. Rousseau had uncovered a second store of weapons and ammunition, while Juliette’s man, Bastien, had found twenty kilos of raw cocaine.

The residential building was of a newer design. It was three stories tall and appeared as if it might contain six units. Juliette landed the drone nearby in an area that was a small park.

After entering, they saw that it was a private living quarters that took up the entire building. The enormous entryway had a thirty-foot-high ceiling with a massive crystal chandelier. On one side of the space was a mahogany bar with red leather stools that could seat eight, and a twenty-foot-wide viewing screen was visible from anywhere in the room. It looked like something you might see in a restaurant or a good hotel.

Juliette whistled. “I’ll bet you that a higher up in The Club owns this.”

Vernier pointed at the windows. “Look. They’ve got bars on them.”

There were bars, and they weren’t the inconspicuous, decorative type you see in some posh homes to supplement the security system, but heavy black bars bolted to the inside of the window frames.

There was a kitchen toward the rear of the first floor that had gleaming appliances. They discovered the crate that had been delivered. It was open and contained the components of a high-end stereo system, along with a container that held old vinyl albums wrapped separately in sleeves of bubble wrap.

Brock straightened up after looking through the crate. “We might be wasting our time here.”

“I still want to see what’s on the other floors,” Juliette said.

Most of the second floor was taken up by one large bedroom and six smaller ones. The large bedroom was decorated well, but the smaller ones were stark in comparison. It all looked odd to Brock.

They had to take the stairs up, because the elevator could only be activated through a biometric scanner that required a palm print. As they headed up the stairs to investigate the third floor, they found a locked security gate on the final landing. The gate was made of metal and had another one of the biometric locks on it. Brock wondered what was hidden away on the third floor.

Juliette tried rattling the gate and found that it was seated securely in its frame. “We’re going to need more than a crowbar to get past this.”

“Not necessarily,” Brock said. He had been studying the door and noticed that it was set into the surrounding walls. Those walls appeared to be made of normal sheetrock. He jammed the tip of the crowbar into the wall and took a chunk out of it. The doorframe had a flat metal border, but it only extended out about an inch. Beyond that was only the wallboard and wooden framing.

Brock kept tearing away at the wall until he could get the upper right corner of the gate to move. It was slow going. As he paused for a moment, he checked his watch, then spoke to Juliette.
